September 2023 – Mrs. Loewe is my math teacher who teaches 6th grade here at O. Henry. Here are some questions I asked her during our interview.
Question: How long have you been teaching at O. Henry?
Answer: This will be my 17th year teaching at O. Henry.
Question: Why did you choose to be a math teacher?
Answer: I chose to be a math teacher because I always loved math in high school. I competed in math tournaments representing my school. I even lettered in “Mu Alpha Theta” (the math club) in high school. I became a math teacher because I wanted to make a difference in the lives of others. I knew that I could teach math to kids.
Question: What is one high and one low about O. Henry?
Answer: My high is probably the diversity because I like teaching different kids and families. And then, my low would be that I live far from O. Henry, and I have to wake up early to get to school on time.
Question: What’s your favorite grade to teach?
Answer: My favorite grade to teach is 6th grade so far because it’s just so fun.
Question: Where did you go to college?
Answer: I went to Steven F. Austin for undergrad and then got a bachelor’s degree in science.
Question: What do you like to do in your free time out of school?
Answer: I like to spend time with my family and play card games.
Question: If you weren’t a math teacher what job would you have instead?
Answer: If I weren’t a math teacher I would probably go back to being a computer programmer.
Question: Where did you grow up?
Answer: I grew up in Humble, Texas. It’s a small town in the Houston area that’s right outside of the city.
Question: What was your first job?
Answer: My first job out of college was a computer programmer. I wrote code for an aerospace and defense company. It was specifically related to missiles for the government. I then went to a cosmetic company and wrote code for them for several years. I was promoted up to a director of technology with over 100 employees reporting to me. That’s the job I walked away from to become a teacher. Being a teacher is what I’ve always wanted to do. My family talked me out of it when going to college because teachers don’t make any money. I made big bucks for a few years, and then I gave all that up to make a difference.
Question: If you could travel anywhere in the world where would it be and why?
Answer: I would travel to Greece because I think it looks really pretty, and I like the architecture, and the blue water. And it just seems like a really pretty place to visit.
