Up close with Ms.Rayo
Ms. Rayo is a teacher at O. Henry Middle School who brings energy, humor, and a love of learning to her classroom. In her first year at O. Henry, she has found teaching to be both challenging and rewarding. She enjoys helping students reach their goals, especially when they finally understand a difficult lesson. Whether she is talking about math, science, vegetarian cooking, or her dream trip to Japan, Ms. Rayo shows that learning is all about curiosity, practice, and not giving up.
Q1. How do you like your first year at O. Henry?
“I really love it. It has been a challenging but a rewarding year.”
Q2. Why did you choose math as your subject?
“Math is a fun challenging puzzle that I was not always good at. But I love a challenge and it’s a rewarding feeling to accomplish a goal you set for yourself.”
Q3. Why did you also choose science to study for?
“I like knowing how the world works and knowing that every day stuff that is in order for it to work is so complicated.”
Q4. If you had to teach a class on one thing,, not related to your subject, what would it be?
“I would teach a vegetarian cooking class. I think life skills are important and need to be practiced at school. The reason it would be vegetarian is because I don’t eat meat and I think if I touched raw chicken, I would throw up.”
Q5. Why do you think kids are not fond of math?
“I think kids hate math because it can be confusing and challenging. In order to be good at math it takes a lot of practice.”
Q6. What are youryou hidden talents?
“I am flexible and I can do hard yoga positions.”
Q7. What would your students be surprised to find out about you?
“I am a first generation Colombian American and I speak fluent Spanish.”
Q8. What is your dream vacation?
“My dream vacation is to Japan. I would go to Tokyo and eat a lot of ramen and shop for crazy looking shoes.”
Q9. What is your favorite book in middle school? And what character would you be?
“My favorite book in middle school was Twilight. In middle school I was related to Bella Swan but now I think I’m Edward because I’m pale and old.”
Q10. What is your favorite part of teaching.?
“My favorite part of teaching is helping students accomplish their goals. It really makes my day when students tell me that they finally understand a lesson.”
