Imagine walking into O. Henry and being greeted by a dog with fluffy paws, a wagging tail, and an irresistibly cute face. That emotional support animal (ESA) could make all the difference. Middle school is a challenging time, filled with stress, anxiety, friendship troubles, and the struggle to balance responsibilities. An ESA dog could offer comfort and support, helping students navigate the difficulties of middle school life.
While emotional support dogs do not require official certification, it is strongly recommended that they receive basic training. This includes being potty trained and knowing essential commands such as sit, stay, come, and leave it. In a school setting, many ESA dogs are also trained in deep pressure therapy—a technique where the dog gently places their head or paw on someone feeling anxious or overwhelmed to help calm them. Additionally, every ESA needs a responsible handler. At O. Henry, Ms. Ivy, our school counselor, would be an ideal candidate. Choosing the right breed is also crucial. A golden retriever would be a wonderful choice for our school due to their loyalty, friendliness, intelligence, and remarkable sensitivity to emotions. These qualities make them the perfect companion for students.
Emotional support dogs in schools provide many benefits. They can improve social skills, reduce anxiety, help with emotional regulation, and even increase school attendance! Northside Elementary in Waxahachie, Texas, got an ESA dog and says she has been a wonderful addition to their school. The dog, Patches, is a Labrador retriever mix. “This is a very positive place already, but adding Patches is just another way that we’re able to reach children.” Principal Hollingsworth says. Northside Elementary says Patches has lowered stress and lifted spirits. O. Henry’s ESA would do the same and so much more!
In conclusion, a golden retriever ESA could help so many kids in our school. They reduce anxiety and help kids gain confidence. They would be a perfect new addition to our school. After all, O. Henry deserves an amazing new member, and this one has fur.
